COSHH ASSESSMENT & MANAGEMENT 

Designed for all who may be required to conduct COSHH assessments, especially managers and supervisors, the course provides step-by-step guidance on identifying risks, controlling them, and completing the requisite records to comply with the law. It is especially useful in helping to clarify whether a formal assessment is required.

Typical Course- Duration 5 to 6 hours*

 Hazardous substances (40 mins

• The scale of the problem
• Types of injury and ill-health
• Routes of entry to the body
• Principles of protection

 The Law   (15 mins)

• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regs.2002

 Stretch Break(5 mins)

 Risk Assessment  (20 mins)

• General Principles
• Who is Competent to be an Assessor?

 Elements of a COSHH Assessment:- (40 mins)

• Identification of hazardous substances in the workplace.
• Understanding the hazard -  Sources of information
• Who is at risk?
• Quantifying risk - severity & likelihood
• Possible control measures- hierarchy of eleven options
• Consultation - Legal requirement & practical value
• Recording the Assessment - suitable forms
• Informing the workforce
• Monitoring effectiveness of the COSHH Assessment
• Reviewing the assessment - Annual, post-incident, change of risk

 Coffee Break (15 mins)

 Practical COSHH Assessment (50 mins):-

Taking a substance currently in use at the clients workplace, to work through each stage of the COSHH Assessment process and record the findings on appropriate forms, to arrive at a completed COSHH assessment.

 Repeat the process for a substance occurring as a waste product in the workplace

 Stretch Break (5 mins)

 Turning Words into Practice (30 mins)

• Communicating the COSHH Assessment to the workforce

 Asbestos    (10 mins)

• New duties under Control of Asbestos at Work regs. 2006

* The duration of the course may be varied depending  upon the experience of the participants,  the nature of their work, and the systems already in place.

To deliver this training to a group of up to 15 staff on your premises, the cost is £380 + vat for the group, inclusive of course handouts and certificates of training. Depending on the location, a travel charge may apply
